Dr Stacey Thomson

Chartered Clinical Psychologist

I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2008, I am registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). Since qualifying I have specialised in working with children, young people and families. I have experience in working with anxiety, depression, emotional and behavioural difficulties and trauma. I use my knowledge of range of therapies including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) to devise an individualised intervention especially for you.
I am also a qualified yoga teacher and have an interest in the link between body and mind including the ways in which yoga philosophy and practice can improve wellbeing.
I believe that the relationship between therapist and client is the most important factor in successful therapy and provide a friendly, empathic and non-judgemental space. I always consider your unique circumstances and story to understand what is going for you. In the first session we will discuss what you would like to get from therapy and together create a plan using your strengths.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

CBT or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a talking therapy that guides you to examine thoughts, feelings and behaviours and the way these affect each other. Learning to identify and understand thoughts, feelings and behaviours can help you to change how you think, feel and act.

CBT uses a structured approach in which you will learn about feelings and how they affect your body. Together, we will build strategies for coping with emotions, skills to challenge your thoughts and ways to have more choices over your actions.

CBT is a thoroughly researched therapy that is shown to be effective for anxiety, depression, panic, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

DBT or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy uses talking and activities to help you name, understand and cope with emotions. Dialectic means that two things that seem to be opposites can sometimes both be true and this can make things easier to deal with.

In DBT you first learn about Mindfulness which is a bit like meditation. Mindfulness helps you to name and understand feelings so that you can be in control of feelings instead of them controlling you.

DBT can help if it seems like your emotions are controlling you, you feel up and down all the time and it’s hard to get along with people.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing or EMDR helps people to change the way bad memories affect them. Sometimes when we have had a horrible experience in the past it makes it harder for us to do things now. In EMDR your therapist will ask you to think about the bad memory paired with eye movements or tapping your knees. This method is shown to help people see memories as non-threatening and just something that happened in the past.  EMDR is done at your pace and you remain in control. EMDR is useful for the treatment of trauma, anxiety, phobias and even pain.
